They also appear throughout the novels and have inspired many imitations by both the members of the Friends of Freddy and other characters in the books. Notable among these is Mrs. Peppercorn who sought to help Freddy with his poetry in <em>Freddy and the Spaceship<\/em> by composing the following verses:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome stars are large and some are small,<br \/>\nAnd some are quite invisiball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe light from some far distant stars<br \/>\nDoes not reach earth for yars and yars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A more thoughtful commentary on Freddy\u2019s poetry was offered by the screech owl, Uncle Solomon, in what might be termed a &#8220;poetry slam,&#8221; found in\u00a0<em>Freddy Plays Football<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;[Freddy] began hastily to recite,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;Through the night, through the dark, through<br \/>\nthe rain and sleet,<br \/>\nBy hill and valley and plain,<br \/>\nPlods the wanderer pig, on weary feet\u2014&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;And his poetry gives me a pain,&#8217; interrupted Uncle Solomon, from his lookout on a branch above the pool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Oh, keep still!&#8217; said Freddy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;And his tears they drip like rain,&#8217; he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Personally,&#8217; said Uncle Solomon. &#8216;I prefer my version. It avoids the use of the word \u2018they,\u2019 which is unnecessary, and it is more solidly constructed. However, as you were no doubt about to point out, it is a criticism of your poem, which, just as it is, heaven knows, is at the moment out of place. H\u2019m, let me see. How\u2019s this? \u201cThe pig with the infantile brain.\u201d More descriptive. I assume, of course, that it is yourself whom you are describing and not some other pig, to whom it might not apply.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>. . . Freddy shrugged and went on,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;And he sighs, and he moans, and his head bends low,<br \/>\nAnd his tail has come uncurled,<br \/>\nFore he has neither mansion nor bungalow\u2014<br \/>\nNot a home in the whole wide world.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Got you that time!&#8217; he said with a triumphant glance at the owl, who evidently hadn\u2019t been able to think of a rhyme quick enough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;Not a home, not a friend, no uncles or aunts,<br \/>\nNo brothers or sisters or cousins\u2014&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Not a coat, not a vest, not a pair of pants,&#8217; said Uncle Solomon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Okay, you\u2019re so smart; finish it,&#8217; said Freddy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I merely suggest,&#8217; said the owl, &#8216;I do not complete. I know quite well that there is only one correct rhyme to \u2018cousins\u2019. It is \u2018dozens.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Freddy expressed surprise. &#8216;I didn\u2019t know you knew so much about poetry.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I know a great deal about words. It is not the same thing. However, proceed.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Freddy went on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;Though happier pigs, as they sing and dance,<br \/>\nHave relatives by dozens,&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Personally,&#8217; said the owl, &#8216;I have not found that a multiplicity of relatives is conducive to gaiety. But continue.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;For others, the lights in the windowes gleam,<br \/>\nFor others, the fried eggs sputter;<br \/>\nFor\u2014&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;For the pig, all puffed up with self-esteem,<br \/>\nA roll in the muddy gutter.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>And Uncle Solomon gave his dry little titter. &#8216;Rather neat, I think.
